Recently I travelled to Mexico and volunteered my photography services to Compassion Copper Canyon, a non profit organization whose mission is to provide spay and neuter services to animals in the Copper Canyon region of Chihuahua. Dr. Shannon Dawkins and her team of veterinarians worked tirelessly over a six day period and spayed and neutered over 300 animals. For me it was an exciting adventure into the heart of Tarahumara country amongst people widely regarded as the world’s greatest endurance runners. Guachochi, site of Mexico’s Ultramaratón de los Cañones, served as our home base. We ventured daily to smaller villages where we met children with family pets wrapped in blankets or in tow. Many thanks to Dr. Alvaro Medina, owner of El Paso’s Mobile Pet Vet, who invited me to join the trip, and a special round of applause to Dr. Dawkins for her unwavering commitment to providing much needed veterinary services for the rural communities of Mexico’s famous Barrancas Del Cobre.
